  7. downloaded it, and I can check in here frequently to answer any questions.

  15. So here's the first message - V4.3 should be out soon. Any beta tester
  16. volunteers? It has the following new features:
  17.    1.) Find with change and change all, with a 'real' moveable find
  18.           window.
  19.    2.) Window settings, font info, size and locations are saved for every
  20.           window now, so once you set/place them that's where they'll open.
  21.    3.) Faster word wrap to window.
  22.    4.) Rearranged menu so all window setting parameters are in one dlog.
  23.    5.) Font/tab info is saved with documents.
  24.    6.) A possible fix for FontDA Juggler + problem.
  25.    7.) Etc. Thanks for all the feedback so far...

  49. I've just uploaded McSink V4.3. This should be the last for a while until
  50. V5.0, which will be a major update. Here's a list of the major 4.3 changes:
  51.  
  52.  
  53.    - Added Change and Change All to the Find command, which also now has
  54.         it's own moveable window which stays open after the Find.
  55.    - Added a Window Statistics command which counts chars, lines, words,
  56.         sentences, and paragraphs.
  57.    - Rearranged the menu so that all window settings are in one place.
  58.    - Window settings, font/size, and location/size are now remembered for
  59.         all windows (even the Find window.)
  60.    - Font and tab info is now saved with documents in the MDS/QUED format.
  61.    - Added 'action' buttons to all set parameters dialogs so you can do the
  62.         command immediately after setting the parameters without going
  63.         through the menu again.
  64.    - Word wrap to window is <much> faster.
  65.    - Fixed some MacWrite Quit and MultiFinder problems.
  66.    - Fixed a few other reported bugs. (All that were reported have been
  67.         fixed.)

  78. I can live with just the DA but the docs would be helpful to test the things
  79. others will be trying to use.  Was it 4.3 you wanted tested or 5.0? Looks like
  80. 4.3 will get a thorough shakedown from the masses!

  82. BTW, I've been using McSink since 1.?.  One of the most useful DA's I've
  83. encountered.  As I think I have said before, thanks for writing it and making
  84. it available.

  93. been properly disciplined and will not zorch McSink anymore. The new version

  108. Had McSink trash a file today; Mac+, 2.5 MB, multifinder. Last operation was
  109. lower case, then word cap, then cleaning up a few places. Saved,  then tried
  110. to print. Bomb. On reopening, file was garbage.

  123. Need a tester or two for McSink V4.4, specifically to see if it now prints to
  124. a LaserWriter or an ImageWriter LQ. I made some changes to the print code that
  125. <may> fix the crash problem, but I have no idea if it works or not. Any
  126. volunteers? If so, I'll Genie mail you a copy to try. Thanks,

  163. I've just uploaded McSink V4.5. In addition to several bug fixes and some
  164. cleanups, these are the major additions:
  165.  
  166.     - Can now search for one or more occurrences of a character.
  167.     - Added Flush Right To Length command.
  168.     - Added Show invisibles command.
  169.     - Added Auto-indent mode.
  170.     - Added cursor key cmd opt, and shift extension select stuff
  171.     - New windows without filenames now ask for changes to be saved.
  172.     - Added option to open a file dialog on an open.
  173.     - Triple-clicking selects the current line.
  174.     - Operations on selected text no longer remove the selection.
  175.     - Now prints to a LaserWriter (and sometimes to an LQ).
  176.     - Added option to print to modem port.

  190.    * Now saves window positioning information in the document file.
  191.    * Added Stack windows and Tile windows commands.
  192.    * Added Status line command.
  193.    * Added Show page breaks.
  194.    * Fixed MultiFinder bug introduced in 4.7 - no longer quits McSink
  195.         when switching to an application.
  196.    * Various other small bug fixes.

  241. I have uploaded McSink V5.0d. There are four files: the DA, the full MacWrite
  242. Docs, a text change history file, and a companion application called McSink
  243. Opener that gives McSink files their own icon and lets you double-click open
  244. them. Here are the major changes...
  245.  
  246.     Added: Now supports 'real' non-draft printing, including Page
  247.            Setup and Print Job dialogs. Also, now works correctly on
  248.            AppleTalk.
  249.     Added: Other... command to Font Size menu lets you specify any
  250.            font size from 1 to 127 points.
  251.     Added: Goto line... command to Search menu.
  252.     Added: Compare windows command to the Misc. menu lets you compare
  253.            two windows.
  254.     Added: "Always Save main window changes checkbox" to Configure
  255.            dialog.
  256.     Added: You can now cut, copy, and paste in all dialogs, including
  257.            Find.
  258.     Added: The McSink Opener companion application. Let's you
  259.            double-click open McSink files.
  260.     Changed: Mouse-holddown auto-copy and paste are now "normal"

  279. Hi, Dave. I have a question about the DA. I have tried to write messages in it
  280. for uploading (4.8) and got a strange setup. I'd type and the print wouldn't
  281. wrap. It would go off forever, to the right. It'd be there somewhere, but I
  282. couldn't get it to do what I want. I suspect this is a matter of simply
  283. setting the prefs better, but I fiddled with it and couldn't get it to do what
  284. I wanted. I (obviously) haven't used the program much. I love its ability to
  285. open my huge text file archives while I'm in a telecom program. I'd like to be
  286. able to use it to write stuff, too. Thanks. --Linda

  292. Linda, you have to goto the windows menu selection and open the settings
  293. dialog and check wrap typing and the radio button for "to Line Length" Other
  294. wise it can go off the screen and never wrap. You also need to set the line
  295. length in the same dialog to the number of characters that you want it to wrap
  296. to....

  304. Norm, I am positive it didn't help, and that I checked both wrap and to line
  305. length. And I had 80 in the character numbers. And it just stayed the way it
  306. was. I am as positive as anyone can be who often makes mistakes. <giggle> --L

  313.    Norm's right. You are also. If you already have text and then checj wrap
  314. typing, it won't wrap the text already in the window - only new typing. You
  315. have to wrap old text manually. If it doesn't wrap while you type after
  316. setting wrap typing, then there's something wrong and I'd like to know some
  317. more details.
  318.    In general, McSink's wrap capabilities are just a stopgap until I can get
  319. in real automatic wrapping, but that's a little ways off and will probably
  320. coincide with some style and pagination capabilities also - a major
  321. enhancement.

  328. Thanks, Dave. I see now. I have to set it first and then import the text. Or
  329. set it first and then type the text. I'd start typing and then notice  it
  330. hadn't wrapped. That's a bit awkward. Is there a way to set it up to default
  331. to the format I want?

  333. I must tell you I love being able to open my huge archives while in Smartcom,
  334. and being able to have several windows open. It's much more versatile than the
  335. DAs I've been using--if I could just get it to work a little more easily for
  336. writing up the text files I upload.

  344. If you set it to wrap typing in a window, then that setting is remembered for
  345. the next use of that window. So, if you want it to always wrap typing in all
  346. windows, open all the windows and turn on wrap typing in each, then close them
  347. all. A little awkward, but you only have to do it once.

  360. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it to this week's MacExpo, so I guess I'll just
  361. have to release the new McSink the old-fashioned way - without any pomp and
  362. ceremony. I've just uploaded V6.1 into DL5. Here are the major changes:
  363.         - A new menu interface, consisting of a menu bar inside the
  364.                 text window, across the window's full width.
  365.         - Support for color text, highlighting, caret, etc., if you
  366.                 have a color Mac.
  367.         - Support for page breaks.
  368.         - Macro capability as an extra cost option (available only to
  369.                 registered owners.)
  370.         - The ability to Read (not Open) MacWrite and WriteNow files.
  371.         - Clipboard append Cut and Copy.
  372.         - A new Space Runs to One Tab command.
  373.         - And a host of smaller improvements and bug fixes.
  374.  
  375. The full docs are no longer being distributed - only the new changes are
  376. documented (briefly) - due to several factors, not the least of which is a
  377. change in McSink's distribution. McSink, or a superset of same, is "going
  378. commercial" as a product called Vantage. Also, the same company that's
  379. publishing Vantage is also taking over shareware distribution of McSink. This
  380. is all explained in detail in the accompanying doc file.

  392. Rats, just when I'd just about figured out the old menus and (almost) read the
  393. manual.  The text file with V6.1 doesn't make it clear (at least to me)
  394. whether Preferred Software will be contacting registered users with upgrade
  395. offers, or whether we must write to them to order. Can you clarify?  Best of
  396. luck with the new venture.  There are a lot of commercial products already on
  397. the market that aren't half as  useful. -- Richard Bourgerie

  403. I <never> figured out the old menus! And I think you'll find that once you use
  404. the new window menu bar, you'll never ever use the old DA menu. Yes, Preferred
  405. Software will be making a mass (well, a small mass) mailing to all registered
  406. owners regarding upgrade details. The only thing really holding it up is that
  407. the Spelling Checker isn't ready yet.

  415. The old menu was somewhat awkward (that's not a criticism - you had to cram an
  416. awful lot into a single menu); the menu bar sounds like a great approach. And
  417. the color will be nice too. Great work, Dave!

  423. Arrgh. I just spent about 10 hours massaging a humongous file, and could have
  424. made use of the macro capability! I hope wou have also fixed the case change
  425. so that words separated by a period, not a space, are treated as separate
  426. words E.G. I.B.M). The file I was treating was all upper case, and I had to do
  427. a lot of search and replace to fix. Would also    help if    n  u  mbers were
  428. considered separators too.

  434. Yes, macros help an awful lot for repititive tasks. Sorry I couldn't have had
  435. it available sooner! The method of word separation was never raised as a
  436. problem, so I didn't change it. I, too, have thought that I should. I think
  437. I'll make it user-decidable as to what's a word-break char and what's not in
  438. some future version (maybe Vantage.)
  439.    I'll be on vacation for 10 days starting today, so I won't be able to check
  440. in here for awhile.

  461. I've had a strange problem trying to install both versions 5.0 and 6.1 of
  462. McSink.
  463.  
  464. I am using Suitcase 1.2.4.  When I try to user Font/DA Mover 3.6 (Multfinder
  465. not running) to install either version of McSink in my main DA suitcase file,
  466. I get the following alert box:  "Sorry, there has been a serious problem.  ID
  467. = 200, -113" with a button to return to the Finder.  Earier versions of McSink
  468. had resided there with no problem, and if I leave McSink in its original
  469. suitcase file, it works fine (I'm using 6.1 to compose this).
  470.  
  471. Here is the environment:  SE with 2.5 meg memory, AOX Doubletime-16
  472. accellerator, Finder 6.0, System 4.20, INITs and cdevs too numerous to
  473. mention.  I'll be glad to supply any other information if it will help.

  483. I ran into that problem once with an earlier version. Do you by any chance
  484. have vaccine installed? That will get in the way of F/DA mover, with sometimes
  485. interesting results (in the sense of the old chinese ciurse "may you live in 
  486. interesting times:).

  508. After looking at 6.1, I am definitely thinking of purchasing the commercial
  509. version. But I have a question, and a bug report.
  510.  
  511. The question - will the spelling checker dictonary be editable, or will I have
  512. to create my own for words that are not in the supplied dictonary?
  513.  
  514. The bug report - If you are not careful McSink will replace the contents of a
  515. previously opened file with the contents of a new file. The procedure that
  516. causes this is as follows:
  517.  
  518. 1. Configure McSink to bring up the Open File dialog upon launching.
  519.  
  520. 2. Launch McSink and when the Open File dialog comes up open a file (f1).
  521.  
  522. 3. Choose Open and open a second file (f2).
  523.  
  524. 4. Click in the f1 window to activate it, and close it, thus leaving only the
  525. f2 window open.
  526.  
  527. 5. Choose New and create a new file.
  528.  
  529. 6. Save the new file by using cmd-S.
  530.  
  531. What happens at this point is that instead of getting a Save File dialog
  532. asking you to name the new file, McSink automatically saves the file in f1,
  533. replacing the original contents. Fortunately, the file I lost was not that
  534. valuable.
  535.  
  536. Also, I too had a problem installing McSink with the F/DA mover. I believe
  537. that the problem is caused by Suitcase 1.2.4 rather than by Vaccine. I had to
  538. uninstall Suitcase in order to install McSink into my system file.

  547. McSink seems to be doing okay now. It was when I was  changing some of the
  548. color options that it would crash. Or, rather, right afterwards - the changes
  549. took effect.

  551. Concerning Vacine, I'm running McSink from Font/DA Jugglar, so I'm not sure
  552. Vacine is a factor.

  566. I just got 6.1 the other day, and am also considering the commercial package..
  567. But...  I was using it to edit a captured text file from GEnie (a large file)
  568. and was selecting large blocks of text (Using the mouse) to delete (by
  569. pressing delete).. It did stange things.  Once I release the mouse to delete
  570. the selected text, only to find the whole document was selected!  Also, when
  571. selecting material off the top of the screen, the scrolling was jerky, and
  572. selected text occasionaly would flicker between white on black and black on
  573. white.. very annoying..

  575. I would also be nice to be able to open Word 3.01 documents, and to be able to
  576. specify which control chars to strip..

  592. Dave, I donno if I clarified what I said earlier. I was getting  system
  593. crashes on a Mac II when I was setting color options, but after that there
  594. were no further problems. The color settings took effect, but after each
  595. setting there would be a bunch of garbage on the McSink window and a general
  596. freeze up.

  603. When do you think the new "Vantage" upgrade notices might arrive...I'd   
  604. really like to get the spell checker and macros up to speed. Or can I get
  605. those from you? I'm a registered user and I think I'm confused by the  docs
  606. that came with version 6.1 as regards the upgrade policies...could you clarify

  686. the status of Vantage, et.al.   They told me they were having some trouble
  687. printing the manuals, and they should be shipped in "a week or two."
